Corunna Midgets Competed in Stratford Tournament

tuesday june 18, 2013

This past weekend saw the Corunna Midgets travel to Stratford to compete in their first tournament of the year.

Friday night Corunna played Hanover and the game was a pitcher’s duel. Corunna’s two pitchers, Jake Dolbear and Derek Williams limited Hanover to just three hits but a couple of untimely walks and errors proved to be their downfall and lost the game 5 – 3 in a game that called after 5 innings due to a time curfew. Corunna had 5 hits but couldn’t put anything together in the time shortened game.

Saturday morning Corunna played West London came out on the short end again losing 6 – 2. West London scored all their runs in the third inning on just three hits but three walks hurt them again. Jeremy Devereaux took the loss with relief help from Kyle Scott and Jordan Pavey. Corunna had six hits in the loss.

Saturday after Corunna came up against the undefeated host team Stratford. Corunna scored two runs in the second inning and three runs in the third inning for a 5 – 0 lead. Stratford chipped away with two runs in the 4th inning and two more in the 5th inning as Corunna had a 5 – 4 lead going into the bottom of the 6th inning. Stratford sent nine players to the plate in the bottom of the 6th and scored 5 runs. A bases loaded double was their undoing along with once again some untimely walks. Corunna scored twice in the top of the 7th but couldn’t muster any more runs and lost 9 – 7. Zack Sutherland threw 4 strong innings for Corunna but the relief help of Keenan Smith, Jake Romphf and Derek Williams struggled and couldn’t hold Corunna’s lead.

The Midgets are back in action this coming weekend with a game Saturday in Essex where they play the Essex Minor team at 1:00 pm. On Sunday they play a doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m. in Courtright. The first game they host Tecumseh with Walker Home Sites coming in for the 2nd half of the DH.
