Sarnia Sting Minor
Midgets edged
Cambridge Hawks 2-1
in a penalty filled
Alliance league game
Saturday afternoon
at Sarnia Arena.
Cole Lauzon was
sharp in net as the
Hawks outshot the
Sting 7 to 3 in the
scoreless first
period. Sarnia
endured 5 penalties
while Cambridge were
handed 3.
The second period
heated up with more
penalty calls of
tripping and head
checks. Shortly
after a power play
ended, Nolan Riley
put a move on Blair
Wickett in the
Cambridge net and
fired the puck home
low to the goalie’s
right side. Jeff
Williams and Cullen
Smith drew assists
on the goal at 7:26.
Three more penalties
for Sarnia and two
more for Cambridge
followed in the
second. The Hawks
held a 16 to 10 shot
on goal advantage
after two.
Sarnia’s defense
held early in the
third through
pressure from the
Hawks as they killed
off penalties for
slashing and
hooking. Cambridge
tied the score at
6:10 of the third on
Jake Hussy’s hard
shot from near the
boards. While
number 7 for
Cambridge was in the
box for slashing,
Sarnia scored a
power play goal
which proved to be
the winner. Richard
McIntosh took a pass
across the ice from
Dillon Saunders and
fired a low shot
past Wickett’s left
pad for the goal at
4:50. Nolan Riley
also drew an assist
on the play. In
spite of Drew Morgan
being hurt by rough
play and Kevin Durco
being cross checked
at the end of the
game, Sarnia
prevailed for the
victory. 26 minutes
in penalties were
called on Sarnia and
the same on
Cambridge including
a hitting from
behind ejection. The
Hawks outshot the
Sting 25 to 18 in
the hockey game.
The Jr Sting are
back in action on
Sunday (Sept 30)
hosting the
Brantford 99ers at
6:00 pm at Sarnia
Arena.
