JANUARY 30, 2012

The Sarnia Jr. Sting Major Atom MD defeated the visiting Stratford Warriors by a score of 4-1 on Saturday January 28 at the Clearwater Arena.

Mathew Waun opened the scoring in the first period unassisted as he jumped on a Stratford turnover and buried a shot top shelf.

Both teams would have chances in the second but neither would score. In the third Stratford would tie it up with 6 minutes left in the game.

Nathan Oliphant would restore Sarnia’s lead less than a minute later from Damon Skinn-Wai and Collin Zimmer. Cole Goossens would add an insurance marker shortly after from Tyler Talbot-Ellis and Beynon Jonas. Nathan Oliphant would add his second of the game from Tyler Talbot-Ellis to finish off the scoring.
Cameron Stevens played another solid game in net for the Jr. Sting, denying the Warriors on several goal mouth scrambles. Greg Ross was the coach’s pick for player of the game and Damon Skinn-Wai was the parents pick.

The Jr. Sting were back in action on Sunday January 29 when they drove to London to face the West London Hawks and came home with a 4 - 2 win.

Cole Goossens opened the scoring at the four minute mark for Sarnia but the early lead was short lived as the Hawks answered 10 seconds later to even the game at one.

In the second period Collin Zimmer fired a power play marker with 5 minutes left in the frame and a short handed goal on a beautiful setup from Spencer Baillie with 2 minutes left in the middle period to put Sarnia up 3-1. The Hawks would add to their scoring with a minute left in the second period to make it a 3-2 game.

In the third Ryan Eyre would score on a nice passing play from Cole Goossens and Evan Trigatti to restore the two goal lead. Sarnia net minder Stevie Schaefer shut the door on the Hawks and the game ended Sarnia 4, West London 2. Mat Waun was the coach’s pick for the player of the game and Tyler Talbot-Ellis was the parents choice.

The Major Atom MD are back in London on Wednesday February 1 to face the Oakridge Aeros.
