Sarnia Minor Midget Split Games on Weekend

October 15, 2012

Tough Road Trip

Sarnia Sting Minor Midgets dropped a 4-0 decision to Kitchener Jr. Rangers in an away league game on Saturday by a 4-0 shutout.

Kitchener got started quickly with 10 shots on Cole Lauzon before a shot was fired on Jacob Schurmann in the Rangers net. Kitchener scored at 9:56 and again at 3:11 to take a 2-0 lead after one. Blain Adams and Jeff Williams did provide good solid body checks along the boards. Callahan Doughty broke up a possible breakaway late in the period or the score might have been worse.

Sarnia had some good chances on the power play after two Kitchener penalties in the second put couldn’t fire it in. Kitchener still outshot Sarnia 10 to 6 in the scoreless period.

Kitchener added two more goals in the third at 12:14 and 8:25 for the shutout. Cole Lauzon made several key saves to keep the score down as Kitchener outshot Sarnia 38-10 on the game. Our defense was kept very busy staving off the Ranger attacks. Sarnia will need to step up the pace when they meet again.

Sting Bounces Back wit Solid Win

Sunday evening, Sarnia Sting Minor Midgets bounced back from their loss the previous day to Kitchener with a solid 5 to 1 win over North London Nationals.Blain Adams took the face-off to start the game at Carling Arena. It was evident that the team was fired up in this one as the Sting drove often to the net in the first. Sarnia didn’t score during an early power play but a hard drive from Gage Riddoch on a drop pass from Richard McIntosh found the net high to the glove side at 9:01. Kyle Adams drew an assist also on the play. At the end of 1, it could have been 2-0 if Michael Pearce hadn’t been robbed on a close in power play attempt.

Dillon Saunders drove home Sarnia’s second goal at 12:52 of the second period assisted by McIntosh and Kyle Adams for the 2-0 lead. Riddoch rode a London attacker into the corner well to stave off an attack on the North London power play in the middle of the period. Unfortunately, Mat Szabo from the goal hesitated in trying to beat a National attacker to the puck to prevent a breakaway late in the period and number 91 beat him to the puck resulting in an empty net goal with 12.4 seconds left in the period.

Saunders scored again at 9:56 of the third to restore the two goal lead assisted by Riddoch and McIntosh. He then fired in his hat trick goal at 7:37 on a power play assisted by Kyle Adams and Riddoch.  Nolan Riley completed the scoring at 5:26 set up by Blain Adams and Jeff Williams. Shane Salisbury and Callahan Doughty had solid games on defense and Mat Szabo made 22 saves in goal. Sarnia outshot the Nationals 33 to 23 on the game.
