Legionnaires Took Win over Top Team

October 31, 2012

Sarnia, On - The Leamington Flyers dropped into second place and the Sarnia Legionnaires moved up a spot in the standings race after Sarnia defeated the Flyers 5 - 3 before 693 fans at Sarnia Arena.

"We worked hard, it was an ugly win, but sometimes you have those especially with three guys out, Boyer, Sauve didn't play and then Kestner  took a blindsided hit and left the game" said Head Coach Dan Rose. "The guys were down three lines and everyone contributed.  It Flyers are a first place team and they were putting the pressure on and it got a little hairy there for a while but the boys showed a lot of character tonight. We can get a lot of confidence from this game knowing we just played the first place team shorthanded."

Jeff Paulley

Leamington took the lead at 5:26 in the first period when Alex Sequin scored a power play goal.  Jeff Paulley scored his first goal of the season at 18:22 on a great shot from the blue line.  Spencer Bronzi and Bobby King were credited with assists on the goal.

"I don't really score goals so it was kind of a bonus." said Team Captain Jeff Paulley   "We didn't come out to good in the first but we picked it up and not quit and beat the first place team."

Second period action saw Jeff Bauer score his 9th goal of the season to give Sarnia the 2 - 1 lead early in the second period.  Jason Teschke assisted on the goal.  At 17:32  a second defense player scored with Steve Farlow scoring on the power play assisted by Hunter Tyczynski and Jason Teschke.

Steve Farlow

"Derek D'Andrea should get an assist on Farlow's goal as well as he did exactly what we practiced the other night.  He screened the goalie and the goalie couldn't see it and Farlow put it right in the net" said Rose

In the third the two teams shared back to back power play goals with Sarnia scoring first at 10:06 on the power play by Zack Tuchklaper from Jeff Bauer and Matt Cimetta.  Alex Sequin scored his second of the night for the Flyers at 13:10.  The Flyers fought back and narrowed the gap to 4 - 3 after Jared Dennis scored for the Flyers at 17:29.  As time ran down Flyers pulled their goalie and Jeff Bauer found the empty net with his second goal of the game and 10th of the season.  Bobby King was given the assist on the goal.

Leamington went 2 for 7 on power play opportunities, Sarnia went 2 for 5.  Leamington outshot Sarnia 40 - 25.  Sean Parker was outstanding in net for the Legionnaires making 37 saves.  Austyn Roudebush took the loss in net for the Flyers with a total of 20 saves.

"It was a huge win for the team, we are second last and we are finally making up some ground.  So it's nice to win at home especially against Leamington." said Paulley

The Legionnaires are now 6 - 7 - 2 and are in 7th (third from the bottom) after the win
