After three St. Christopher
titles won in Junior and
Senior Girls and Junior Boys
Rugby teams the pressure was
on for the St. Christopher
Seniors to sweep the LSSAA
school finals and make
history.
In regular season league
play St. Christopher blanked
Northern in the first game
with a final 12 - 0 and both
sides went scoreless in the
second game.
In the final Northern would
score two penalty kicks to
go up 6 - 0 in the first
half. In the second
the Cyclones took the lead
with a try and successful
conversion kick to go up 7 -
6.
Northern put the pressure on
but play was stopped when
Adam Irwin went down and
laid unconscious on the
field and an ambulance was
called. Irwin did
regain consciousness prior
to being carried off the
field and taken by ambulance
to the hospital to be
examined. Reports
indicate that he received a
concussion in the incident.
Once play resumed the
Cyclones played defensively
and held off Northern
scoring chances.
Northern attempt to score on
a free kick failed and time
ran out for the Vikings
giving the Cyclones
the 7 - 6 win and the 2012
LSSAA Rugby title and the
fourth win for St.
Christopher's.
Scoring the only try in the
game was Riley Herbert and
kicking for the conversion
was Brandon Orr.
"I thought we were lucky,
Northern could have won it
as easily as we did" said 74
year old Coach Ron Savage
"I have had some of these
kids for five years and I
enjoyed it and I'll be back
next year."
St. Christopher's and
Northern will be competing
at OFSSA in early June.
