Friday
night the Sarnia
Sting Major Bantam
AA team hosted the
Hamilton Reps in
game one of the
Playoff Championship
Series. Sarnia came
out hard and had
several great
scoring chances but
were unable to
capitalize on their
opportunities.
Hamilton was first
on the board with a
1-0 lead less than 3
minutes into the
game. The Sting
continued to
struggle in their
own end during the
first period and
were trailing 3-1
after the first
period with Sean
Ginnell scoring the
Sting's lone goal in
the first period.
Second period action
was not much better
for the Sting as
both teams traded
goals in the second
period with the Reps
holding a 4-2 lead
going into the third
period. However at
the end of the
second period there
was a scum down in
the Sting end which
resulted in a
Hamilton player
getting a 4 minute
head contact penalty
so the Sting would
have the power-play
to start the third.
Third period action
had the Sting come
out hard and took
full advantage of
the power-play
opportunity as Kyle
Adams would beat the
Reps goaltender to
bring the Sting
within 1 goal as
Aiden Chapdelaine
and Drew Morgan
picked up assists.
On the same
power-play Sarnia
would tie the game
up as Austin Cooper
would bang in a goal
mouth rebound to tie
things up a 4-4 with
Nolan Riley and
Jared Bourque
getting assists on
the play. Sarnia
played much better
in their defensive
zone in the third
period limiting the
Reps chances on
getting the winner
as the third period
came to a close as
the teams headed to
a 5 min overtime
period. Well it
didn't take long for
this game to end in
overtime as Kyle
Adams would break up
a play in the Sting
zone and move the
puck up to a
streaking Sean
Ginnell who went in
two on one with
Aiden Chapdelaine,
Ginnell would pull
the defender wide
with a nice move and
slide the puck over
the Chapdelaine who
would one time the
puck into the back
of the net just :15
seconds into the
overtime frame
giving the Sting a
huge come from
behind victory and
take game one in the
first to six point
series. Riley
Collins picked up
the win in net.
Saturday the Sting
headed down to
Hamilton for game
two of the series.
Sarnia picked up
right where they
left off the
previous night
filling the net
often and early in
the first period as
Nolan Riley would
put Sarnia on the
board first on a
beautiful pass from
Jared Bourque and
Ricky McPhail. Less
than two minutes
later the Line of
Riley, Bourque and
McPhail would strike
again as Nolan Riley
would give the Sting
a 2-0 lead with his
second of the game.
Aiden Chapdelaine
would increase the
Sting lead to 3-0
with Kyle Adams and
Sean Ginnell picking
up assists. Before
the first period was
over it was the line
of Riley, Bourque
and McPhail again as
Nolan Riley would
score his third of
the game giving him
the first period hat
trick and a 4-0 lead
sending the Hamilton
goaltender to the
shower before the
first period even
came to an end.
Second period action
the Sting increased
their lead once
again as Devin
Butler would one
time a low shot that
went through the
Reps goaltender and
into the back of the
net for a 5-0 lead.
Sarnia controlled
much of the play as
the Reps started to
become more physical
but the outcome of
the game was never
in jeopardy as the
Sting cruised to a
solid 5-1 win to
take game two of the
series. Colin Osler,
Drew Morgan,
Callahan Doughty,
Gage Riddoch, Trever
Forsten and Trent
Duncan all had solid
games on the point
and Matt Szabo
picked up the win in
net.
Sarnia will host the
Hamilton Reps in
game three on Sunday
March 25th 3pm @
Clearwater Arena
Blue. If Sarnia can
pull off the win
they will complete
the sweep and be
crowned the
2011-2012 AA Playoff
Champions. Come out
and cheer on the
boys to victory.
