In St. Thomas
District Baseball
League action the
Alvinston Indians
played a rare Sunday
night game in
Glencoe. The game
was filled with many
runs, and several
lead changes.
The Alvinston
Indians were the
first to score,
giving young pitcher
Jeff Lyons a two to
nothing lead, before
he stepped on the
mound. Joe Triest
walked to lead off
the game, was
sacrificed to second
by Jamie Shields,
Chris Drew followed
with a walk, and
then consecutive
singles by both
Aaron Stocking and
Simon Rogers plated
both J. Triest and
Drew.
Glencoe was quick to
respond however, as
they pieced together
4 straight singles,
and received three
base on balls, en
route to a 5 run
inning, and a 5-2
lead.
Alvinston then went
to work in their
half of the third
inning, and strung
together several
hits, on their way
to a six run inning.
Lyons walked to
start things off,
and he scored on an
RBI single by
Stocking. Rogers
then followed
Stocking with a two
run bomb over the
left field fence.
Chris Shepherd
battled his way on
after a base on
balls, and then a
bunt single by Alix
Chisholm put runners
on first and third.
Andy Triest then
singled to score
Shepherd, and J.
Triest did the same,
plating Chisholm. A.
Triest scored the
sixth run of the
inning, when he
scored after a
fielder's choice.
Now with an 8-5
lead, Alvinston
appeared to be in
the driver's seat,
however, in the
bottom of the third,
the Astros went back
to work again,
scoring 4 runs. That
put Glencoe back in
front by the score
of 9-8. Alvinston
then squared matters
at 9, when a two out
walk by Joe Triest,
and a hit by pitch
by Shields, put
runners on first and
second. Craig Lyons
went in to run for
J. Triest, and he
scored on a clutch
two out game tying
RBI by Drew. Glencoe
repaid Alvinston
with a run in the
bottom of the fifth
inning, and another
10-9 lead.
In the sixth inning,
the Indians made a
push and that was
enough to seal the
win for them.
Alvinston scored 4
runs in the sixth
inning. Rogers
singled to start
things off, and Doug
Charlton doubled,
putting runners on
second and third.
Pinch-hitter Pat
Sanders then
delivered, clubbing
a single the other
way, to score Rogers
and the
all-important tying
run. A. Triest was
then hit by a pitch
to load the bases,
and a Shields hit
down the first base
line was juggled,
allowing Charlton to
score the go-ahead
run in the contest.
Drew and Lyons then
both walked with the
bases loaded,
scoring both Sanders
and A. Triest for
the 12th and 13th
runs.
The final score of
the game was
Alvinston 13,
Glencoe 10. Doug
Charlton came in in
relief of starter
Jeff Lyons, and was
the pitcher of
record, collecting
the win. Charlton
threw the final four
innings, allowing
one run on three
hits, while walking
one batter, and
fanning five.
The Indians are now
8-3 on the season,
and sit in second
place in the league.
They travel to
Springfield on
Tuesday night, to
face the Springfield
Brewers at 8:30pm.
