The St.
Christopher
Cyclones Senior
Boys Soccer team
captured a
bronze medal at
the 2012 OFSAA
Boys ‘AA’
championships
this past
weekend in North
Bay. 20 high
school teams
were represented
at this event.
In game one of
the tournament,
Ryan Greenwood
converted a
penalty kick in
the final 5
minutes as the
Cyclones drew
1-1 with the #4
seed and WOSSAA
champs,
St.Mary’s
Catholic
Secondary School
Warriors from
Woodstock.
Later that day,
Andrew Moxley,
Corey Jackson
and Darien
Primeau scored
as the un-seeded
Cyclones shutout
#6 seeded
Ascension of Our
Lord Secondary
School Eagles
from Peel 3-0,
with Austin
Spearman posting
the clean sheet.
Day two of the
tournament
started with a
4-0 win over
Timmins High and
Vocational
School. Goal
scorers were
Danielo Bucci,
Corey Jackson,
Mike Fazzalari
and Darien
Primeau.
Spearman
recorded the
shutout.
Needing a win to
capture first
place in the
pool,
St.Christopher
knocked off Jean
Vanier Catholic
High School
Jaguars from
York 2-0 with
goals from
Marcelo
Villanueva and
Nic Sproviero.
Michael Rocca
picked up the
win in goal.
Friday night’s
quarter-final
game was a
sudden-death
matchup and the
Cyclones would
get an early
second half goal
from Corey
Jackson to
defeat St.
Stephens
Catholic
Secondary School
Royals from
Bowmanville.
Once again,
Spearman would
hold the fort to
pick up the win.
Assuring
themselves of a
medal on
Saturday, the
Cyclones came
out strong,
dominating
St.Andrew’s
College Saints
from start to
finish, only to
be defeated 1-0
by virtue of a
penalty shot in
the dying
moments. The
loss put the
Cyclones in the
Bronze medal
game and they
gave another
strong effort,
getting a first
half goal by Nic
Sproviero and a
second half goal
by Danielo Bucci
to defeat the
SWOSSAA champs
from Cardinal
Carter 2-0.
Rocca played a
terrific game in
goal to preserve
the win over the
Cougars.
It was a
terrific
tournament for
the Cyclones,
scoring a total
of 13 goals and
allowing just
two. The defense
was anchored by
Thomas Moxley,
Pietro Restivo,
Cliff Timmers,
Ryan Greenwood
and Matt
Stewart.
This was the
third time in 5
years that the
Cyclones have
medalled at
OFSAA. In 2008
in Sarnia, they
captured a
silver medal,
and in 2011 in
Windsor they won
gold. The team
was coached by
Richard Prudom,
Angelo DiMuzio
and Randy
DaSilva.
