Sturgeon Peewees win Bronze
July 30, 2012
Chatham, On -
The Sarnia
Peewees
concluded a
fantastic
weekend for the
organization and
a successful
season for
themselves by
winning the
bronze medal in
the O.F.C. Champ
Day Playoffs at
Chatham Kent
High School.
Their opposition
in this game was
the host
Chatham-Kent
Cougars, a team,
by some quirk in
the schedule,
they did not
play this year.
Chatham took the
opening kick-off
and was forced
to punt by the
Sturgeon defense.
Their punt was a
short one and
was recovered by
one of their on
side players.
The host team
made no mistake
and drove for a
touchdown to
give the Cougars
a 6-0 lead. The
Sturgeon
responded
quickly to this
score. On their
ensuing
possession Gabe
Barnes sped 50
yards to knot
the game at 6.
The Sturgeon
defense forced a
three and out to
begin the second
quarter and the
visitors took
their first lead
of the game as
Barnes again ran
the ball into
the end zone,
this time on a
19 yard run off
left tackle.
Joey Ferrera
recovered a
fumble on the
Cougar's next
possession and
promptly hit
Kurtis Hill with
a 30 yard pass
and run play,
putting the
Sturgeon up 18-6
and apparently
in charge of the
game. However
the Cougars
exploded for 14
quick points on
a 65 yard run by
speedy Daylen
Mailloux and an
interception
return for a
touchdown to
take a 20-18
lead at the half
and to steal all
the momentum
from the
Sturgeon.
The second half
was all Sturgeon
as majors were
scored by Nathan
Greaves on a 1
yard plunge and
and Gabe Barnes
on a 15 yard run
to end the game.
Angel Georgio
had a key
interception to
end a dangerous
looking Cougar
drive.The final
score was Sarnia
Sturgeon 32
Chatham-Kent
Cougars 20. Joey
Ferrera was a
workhorse for
the Sturgeon
carrying the
ball 29 times
for 133 yards.
Gabe Barnes ran
10 times for 115
yards. Kurtis
Hill led the
defense with 7
tackles and Joey
Ferrera had 6.
