Having come off of one of their best
performances, the MD Jr. Sting were very
anxious to play against the top-ranked
West London Hawks. On a blistery winter
day, the West London contingent made the
snowy trek to Sarnia to face the Sting
at the Old Barn. This would be the last
game of the regular season and the
Sarnia boys were looking to end it on a
high note. These two teams have met on
three separate occasions with West
London winning all three. The tide was
about to change however, as Sarnia was
playing their best hockey of the season.
At
the opening face-off, you could see the
determination in the eyes of the Sting
players. They continued to pressure
London in their own end with great
bursts of energy. Sarnia would be
rewarded for their efforts in the 9
minute mark of the opening period when
Sting defenseman Kristian Spitzig made
one of his famous end to end rushes
finishing with the strong wrist shot,
from the top of the circle, which eluded
the Hawk's goalie. Sarnia ended the
period up 1 - 0.
The
Jr. Sting would take a two goal lead
late in the second, when Sting captain
Simon Doan slotted the puck past a
sprawling London goalie. London would
get one back scoring 50 seconds later.
The
third period's pace was fast and furious
producing 4 added goals. Sarnia would
score two more 6 minutes apart, on goals
from winger Adam Ikert and Kurtis
Allardyce. London finished strong
scoring two in the third but were denied
in the final stages of the game from
solid goaltending by Sarnia goalie Ian
Stouth. The final buzzer sounded sending
jubilation across the Sting bench as
Sarnia achieved their goal of finishing
the season with a 4 - 3 win!
Next action for the Sting is Monday
night in London facing the London
Bandits for the opening of playdowns.
