It Was a Celebration Then and Now

August 29, 2012

Last season Joel Sowinski celebrated his first and only goal, as a goalie playing for the Lambton AAA Major Midgets.  At his 17th Birthday celebration Family and Friends were present and witnessed the unveiling of a special gift created by his Dad Dean who over the summer collected the game sheet, the game worn shirt and game puck.  The Major Midget Assistant Coach Jeff Allen was on hand to make the presentation.

The goal was scored in a Alliance AAA Major Midget Showcase Tournament held in London on December 17, 2011 against the Brantford 99's.  Lambton was leading 5 - 4 when Brantford pulled their goalie in the final minutes.

"I saw the other goalie get pulled and one of the coaches called a time out and we went to the bench, I told a couple of the players and the assistant coach that I was going to get a goal, but I didn't really think that was going to happen."  said Joel Sowinski  "I went back to the net and there was about :30 seconds left on the clock and they dumped it in and I came from behind the net and looked and didn't see anything so I sent it back out and hit a stick and went to their blue line.  They dumped it back in and it just happened that everybody shifted and curled at the right time that I had a lane right up the middle.   I fired it and before the puck hit the net my defenceman Nick Zottl tackled me from behind.  It was pretty cool stuff, definitely a memorable moment."

Sowinski will continue to play hockey this upcoming season.   Presently he has trying out for the Lambton Shores Predators Jr. B team.
