January 4, 2014
By Pat Brethauer
The Mooretown Flags took a 4 - 3 win over the
Amherstburg Admirals in shoot out in Great Lakes Jr.
C hockey league action Saturday night in Mooretown.
This was the fourth meeting between
the two teams. "This is the second shoot out
win against them, but it's been really close all
season long." Head Coach Jordan Pennesi said.
The Flags has a 3 - 1 lead in the series against
Amherstburg.
"It was a really good game. One of the best of the
year to watch." Pennesi said "It was one
of those playoff type games with lots of chances at
both ends, I thought we played really well and it
was good to get the two points."
After a scoreless first period Dan
Lumley gave the Flags a 1 - 0 lead scoring the only
goal in the second period with Sam Jasmin and
Macgregor Haddon assisting.
"Don't change nothing" is what
Pennesi said to the team after the first two
periods. "I thought we did simple things
right."
Brett
Beattie of the Admirals tied the game early in the
third before Flags Captain Jeff Schroeter scored two
back to back goals at 12:43 and 15:04 that game the
Flags a 3 - 1 lead.
"I couldn't have done it without my
teammates, Brett (Thompson) and (Brandon) Layman.
The were great giving me the puck and I just put it
in the back of the net." the team captain said.
Amherstburg continued to battle back and went on and
scored two back to back goals just :16 seconds apart
starting at 17:16 to tie the game. First goal
was scored by Brett Beattie, his second of the night
and the third by Dan Matoski.
"I think we were worried about making
a mistake so I think that's why made our mistake."
Pennesi said
"We kind of sat back hoping
that they weren't going to score. But when your up a
couple of goals you got to keep putting it to them
and you can't sit back at all, you got to keep
pushing, pushing for that third insurance marker."
After a scoreless five minute
overtime period the game then went to shootout where
Jeff Schroeter was the first shooter for the Flags
and came up with the only goal in the shootout to
win the game.
"I knew I was going to the right
side, it was open so I just let it go and it went
in." Schroeter said "Then our goalie stayed strong
and saved all three and we won 'er."
Brandon Johnson earned the win for
the Flags with 37 saves. Arren Romeril made a total
of 36 saves for the Admirals.
Both sides were scoreless on two power play
opportunities. Mooretown took a total of six
minutes on three infractions and Ryan Lyle was
unsuccessful on a penalty shot in the first period.
Amherstburg took 14 minutes on three infractions
that included misconduct penalty at the beginning of
the game on a warm up violation.
"I thought we did a good job playing
full 60 minutes. Other than that little hiccup in
the third period it was a good game and definitely
good to get the two points in the end." Pennesi said
With nine games remaining in the
regular season the Flags will meet Amherstburg one
more time.
Mooretown (16-13-1-1) now has a
4 point lead over the Admirals (14-14-1-1) and
remain in sixth place in the standings race.
Next up the Flags will host Belle
River at home on Wednesday January 8. The
series is tied 2 - 2 between these two teams and
this will be the final regular season game and
series tie breaker.
"That will be another good game. All year long we
have had really close match ups, one goal games so
it comes down to those big mistakes, got to try and
minimize those and keep playing our game and not
worried about anyone else."
Wednesday night puck drop is set for
8:00 pm at the Moore Sports and Recreation Centre.
