Mooretown Flags Edged Out by Wallaceburg in Overtime

Mooretown, On - In Great Lakes Jr C hockey action the Mooretown Flags and Wallaceburg Lakers gave their fans their monies worth in an exciting game that was decided in overtime.

Wallaceburg took the lead at 14:49 on a power play by Jeff Nolfo assisted by Bobby Domin and Barry Braun.  At 17:06 McGregor Haddon tied things up assisted by Travis Mullen. 



In the second period Defenceman Brett Storr scored his first goal of the season for the Lakers on a power play assisted by Barry Braun and Jeff Nolfo at 15:13 to take the lead.  Just over a minute later at 16:22 later Wallaceburg took a two point lead after Lucais Meyskens scored a shorthanded goal assisted by Trevor Williams.

 

Mooretown began their journey for a come back as Matt Brandon scored a power play goal to narrow the lead to one.  Jeff Schroeter and Travis Mullen assisted.  Lakers Scott Lubbers regained the two point spread at 13:17 assisted by Lucais Meyskens. 

 

Mooretown continued to fight back and at 14:21 Andrew Sokol scored assisted by Jeff Schroeter. 

Just under two minutes later the Lakers took a unearned goal when Mooretown netminder Brandon Johnson failed to clear the puck bounced off his own teammate into the net.  Bobby Domin was given the point for the goal.  Mooretown was down 5 - 3 at this point in the game but they continued to fight back and at 17:05 Andrew Sokol off of Jeff Sit narrowed the gap to one.  The Lakers took a penalty which game the flags the power play and with an empty net the Flags had the two man advantage and at 19:35 Matt Brandon scored the tying goal assisted by McGregor Haddon.  Regulation time ended with both sides even at 5 - 5.


Late in the overtime period at 4:38 Justin Whitson scored for the Lakers to give them the 6 - 5 overtime win. Sam Jasmin contributed to the winning goal with the assist.

 

Mooretown outshot Wallaceburg 50 - 34.  Devine Cove took the win in net for the Lakers with 45 saves.  Johnson made 28 saves.

 

 

 

Both sides scored two power play goals, Wallaceburg on five opportunities, Mooretown on nine.

 

The win for the Lakers ends a four game losing streak as their last win was against the Flags in Mooretown back in September.  The Lakers are now 6 - 4 - 1.

 

The Flags continue to struggle.  This game was their fifth game that was decided in overtime with one of those games going to a shootout.  The Flags are now 2 - 5 - 3 - 1 for the season.

 

The Flags are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Blenheim.  The Lakers are home on Wednesday Oct 24 when they host Belle River.
