Mooretown, ON – With only two games remaining in
the season and in the middle of a playoff race
for first place in the North Division, the
Mooretown Flags dropped a 5-3 decision to the
Kingsville Comets Wednesday night, putting them
into second place, and finalizing their first
round match up for the playoffs.
Kingsville opened the scoring in the first as
Cody Ray made it 1-0 for the Comets. Jeff
Schroeter would tie the game before the end of
the period, as Mooretown out shot the Comets
14-8.
In the
second, Ray would pick up his second goal of the
game midway through the period for the 2-1
Kingsville lead. Dan Lumley would tie the game
for the Flags, but two more Comets goals would
follow, as Justin Parker scored on the power
play to give Kingsville the lead, and Mark
Sobocan made it a two goal lead with just over a
minute remaining in the second.
In the
third, Mooretown would pull back to within one
as Schroeter would pick up his second of the
game on the power play to make it 4-3. But it
would be as close as the Flags would get, as
with a pulled goalie for an extra attacker,
Mooretown would give up an empty net goal to
Parker for his second of the game, and a 5-3
victory.
Andrew
Ganter made 23 saves in the loss, as Mooretown
out shot the Comets 45-27.
With
the loss, the playoff picture in the North
Division is complete, as Mooretown and Alvinston
both have 42 points and one game remaining. They
both trail the Blenheim Blades with 45 points,
while Blenheim also has two games left to play.
Mooretown will take on Alvinston in the first
round while the final game will decide home ice
advantage. Blenheim will take on Dresden in
round one.
Mooretown finishes off their season Saturday
night with a game against Dresden.
