That became clear over the weekend as the nine clubs that make up the Western Ontario Hockey Conference swept every game they played at the third annual GOJHL Showcase Tournament.
The event, which was held at St. Marys, featured squads from the league's three conferences playing interlocking contests. It was designed to give scouts a chance to see all 26 of the province's Jr. 'B' teams play in a single place on one weekend.
What the scouts saw was total WOHC domination of the Midwest and Golden Horseshoe circuits.
And the Western outfits won even when the odds seemed stacked against them. The Chatham Maroons, who are in fourth place in the West, knocked off Thorold, which is in first in the Golden Horseshoe Conference. And the St. Thomas Stars, who are third in the WOHC, upset Guelph, which holds down top spot in the Midwest Conference.
Locally, the Sarnia Legionnaires and the Lambton Shores Predators both won. The Legionnaires defeated the Wheatfield Blades 3-1 and the Predators, who were 0-10 going into the tournament, upended Fort Erie 3-2.
And on and on it went. The West's Leamington Flyers triumphed 5-3 over Listowel and the LaSalle Vipers knocked off Cambridge 4-3.
The London Nationals, who are in eighth place in the West, surprised the Midwest's always-powerful Brantford Golden Eagles 7-3 and the Strathroy Rockets took care of Stoney Creek by a 7-4 score. If all that wasn't enough, the St. Marys Lincolns drubbed Owen Sound 7-3.
In all, the WOHC outscored its opponents 43-23.
