Sarnia vs London
September 30, 2010

By Dan McCaffery

Here's a preview of tonight's Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League Game at the Brock Street Barn.

WHO – Sarnia Legionnaires (2-5) vs. London Nationals (3-3)

WHEN – 7:10 p.m. at the Sarnia Arena.

WHO'S HOT:

Sarnia – Rookie Brett Thompson has four goals in his first seven Jr. 'B' games, including two last Sunday in St. Thomas.

London – Brett Welychka had two goals last night against St. Thomas.

LAST OUTING:

Sarnia got thumped 7-3 by the St. Thomas Stars last Sunday. The Stars defeated the Nationals 5-3 last night right in London.

RETURNING PLAYER

Rugged forward Andy Sokol makes his season debut with the Legionnaires tonight after completing a seven-game suspension.

General manager Bob Williamson is hoping the spunky left-winger's return will help the club break out of a three-game losing streak.

INJURIES

Sarnia will be missing Captain Tyler Cicchini and mobile defenceman Tanner Ferguson, both of whom have been sidelined with lower body injuries.

STRATEGY

Head coach Jeff Perry has been emphasizing defence in practice all week, so look for the Legionnaires to try to take care of their own end of the rink first.

As for netminders, the coach will turn to veteran Kyle Washer, who has both Legionnaire victories.

SIGNIFICANCE – It's still early in the season, but the Legionnaires are starting to fade out of contention for a top four spot already. If they don't get their act together soon, they will have to worry about securing a playoff spot. As it stands now, they are in eighth place, four points up on Lambton Shores.

HISTORY

London won all six games against Sarnia last year. This is the first meeting between the squads this campaign.

Prior to the drop of the puck Sarnia will honour the 1954-55 inaugural Legionnaire hockey club. That team, which featured future NHL star Don Ward, made it to the Western Jr. 'B' final in the spring of 1955.
