Sarnia
Legionnaires vs
Leaminton Flyers
Season Opener
September 9, 2010
By Dan McCaffery
LEAMINGTON -- The
Sarnia Legionnaires
wasted a strong
goaltending
performance here
last night.
Coach Jeff Perry's
Greater Ontario
Junior Hockey League
club lost 3-1 to the
Leamington Flyers
despite a
sensational effort
by rookie netman
Mike Reed.
Reed, a Florida
native who played
last year in Boston,
made 39 saves,
including a number
of dazzling stops,
to hold Sarnia in
the contest. In the
first period alone
he got in the way of
15 pucks.
The Legionnaires,
by way of contrast,
had a rather pasty
four shots on net
during the opening
20 minutes.
Jeff Schroeter got
Sarnia's only goal
in the third period
when he took a
pinpoint pass from
Brent Sauve and
dented the twine
from 10 feet out.
Moments later, he
weaved through the
defenders on a solo
charge and just
missed his second
goal of the contest.
Leamington's Matt
Ogden opened the
scoring with a
powerplay marker in
the first period.
Ogden swept in on
goal and beat Reed
from point blank
range.
The Flyers made it
2-0 in the middle
frame, with Marco
Canzoneri netting a
powerplay marker
with Leamigton
enjoying a two-man
advantage.
And the home side
was up by three
before Schroeter
finally broke the
shutout.
-
Sarnia was
missing five
players. Owen
Rogers was out
with an injury
that Coach Jeff
Perry said will
keep him out of
the lineup for
about a week.
-
Andy Sokol was
serving the
first of a
seven-game
suspension
picked up during
an incident in
an exhibition
game. And Josh
Chapman couldn't
play because
paperwork that
will allow him
to suit up
hasn't been
completed.
-
The club's two
European players
were also on the
sidelines,
awaiting
permission from
Hockey Canada to
dress.
-
Shots on goal
were 42-29 for
Leamington.
-
Tanner
Tomlinson, Reed
and Schroeter
were singled out
for praise by
Perry after the
game. But the
coach was quick
to add that too
many of his
players failed
to show any
urgency.
-
The Legionnaires
return to action
Tuesday when
they travel to
Forest to take
on the Lambton
Shores
Predators.
