Sarnia Legionnaires vs St. Mary's Lincolns
September 18, 2010

By Dan McCaffery

Goalie Kyle Washer led the Sarnia Legionnaires to a big win Saturday night.

The veteran netminder kicked out all but one of the 33 pucks he faced as the Legion crew defeated a stubborn St. Mary's Lincolns squad 4-1 at the Brock Street Barn. His most spectacular save came on a second period breakaway in which he got a toe on a close-in drive.

The victory, which was far closer than the score would indicate, evened Sarnia's Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League won-lost record at 2-2.

Washer, who has been credited with both Legionnaire wins, was named the game's second star.

"I'm just trying to earn a spot,” he said afterward. “I'm 2-0 but most of all I'm trying to help the team. The team comes first.”

General manager Bob Williamson was not satisfied with the club's effort. “I didn't think we played with the same jump that we had against Strathroy (last Tuesday),” he said.

Assistant coach Joe McCormack agreed, but had praise for Washer, saying he held the Sarnians in the contest during the first two frames.

McCormack also singled out the line of Brent Sauve, Derek D'Andrea and Jeff Schroeter for their good work. “They played well and got rewarded with some powerplay time,” he said.

In fact, D'Andrea opened the scoring in the second period when he jammed in a loose puck during a mad scramble in front of the St. Marys cage. For the rookie winger, it was his first goal of the campaign.

Schroeter and Sauve picked up assists on the play.

But the Lincolns squared matters with a shorthanded tally that came with less than a minute to play in the second period.

Big third period

The Legionnaires took the lead for good at the 5:44 mark of the third when Brett Thompson scored his second of the season. Thompson, who had 18 goals last winter while playing for the Jr. 'C' Mooretown Flags, went hard to the net and was rewarded when a pass deflected in off his knee. Helpers went to Captain Tyler Cicchini and Tyler Annett.

Brent Sauve, who is becoming something of a scoring machine, gave Sarnia a two-goal bulge when he sprang into the clear and rifled the biscuit under the arm of goalie Greg Dodds. Defenceman Steve Farlow picked up the only assist on the goal, which was Sauve's third in just four games.

St. Mary's got into penalty trouble after that and Chase Clark capitalized, scoring from between the face-off cirlces with a hard blast that came in the final minute of action. The Lincs were two men short at the time.

  • Sauve was first star, Washer second and defenceman Jeff Paulley third. Although he didn't get a selection, Tanner Tomlinson may have been the best player on the ice, playing an aggressive but disciplined game.

  • Paid attendance was 1,305.

  • St. Mary's outshot Sarnia 33-28 and held a clear edge in play in the first period.

  • The Legionnaires continue to play shorthanded. Tanner Ferguson has joined Owen Rogers on the injury list, while Andy Sokol sill has three games to serve on a suspension and the team's two European players continue to wait for permission from Hockey Canada to dress.
