The Sarnia Jr. Sting
Minor Atom MD had a busy weekend winning three
games.
October 15 vs
Stratford
On Friday the Sting were
home to the Stratford Warriors. Nathan Oliphant
stared the scoring for the Sting with the assist
going to Evan Trigatti. The Warriors answered back
shortly after before a nice short handed goal from
Colin Zimmer, assisted by Nathan Oliphant. The Jr.
Sting added another goal in the second as Nathan
Oliphant’s quick shot after the face-off caught the
Stratford Goalie off guard for his second goal off
the game, assist by Beynon Jonas.
Stratford added another
goal at the 8:05 mark of the second period to bring
the game to within one goal. In the third period
Beynon Jonas broke in alone and deked the opposing
net-minder low on the stick side to put the Jr.
Sting back up by two. Assisting on Beynon’s goal
were Evan Trigatti and Thomas Cardinal. The Jr.
Sting were called for a total of five penalty’s
during the game which resulted in a 5 on 3 man
advantage for Stratford in the third period.
Excellent penalty killing by the Jr. Sting held the
Warriors off and Mathew Waun put the game out of
reach with a nice goal in the slot, assist Thomas
Cardinal. The final score was Jr. Sting 5 –
Stratford 2.
October 16 at London
On Saturday the Jr.
Sting traveled to London to face the London Bandits.
The home team opened the scoring at 8:55 in the
first before Colin Zimmer scored for the Jr. Sting
to tie it up, assist Thomas Cardinal.
The Sting controlled
much of the play in the second period as Ryan Eyre
and Zander Campbell frustrated the Bandits with
their hard back checking. At 8:09 Zimmer scored
again, short handed and unassisted. Zac Moore
scored shortly after at 6:19 with the assist going
to Nathan Oliphant. Ian Bailey got a nice feed from
Kaz Gudelis and scored at 5:38 to bring the score to
4 to 1.
In the third the Bandits
and Sting traded goals early in the period. The
Bandits scored at 17:42 and Nathan Oliphant replied
at 15:07, assist from Colin Zimmer and Evan Trigatti
to make it 5 to 2 for the Jr. Sting. Sarnia allowed
the Bandits to add two quick goals to get back in
the game but with the Bandits net empty Colin Zimmer
completed his hat trick with an empty net goal. The
final score was Jr. Sting 6 – London Bandits 4.
October 17 at
Stratford
The Sting traveled to
Stratford on Sunday. A much more determined Warrior
team fought hard all game but the Sting came away
with a win. Mat Waun opened the scoring, assist Ian
Bailey. Hayden Griffin banged the puck in two
minutes later on a very nice pass from Zander
Cambpell. Mat Waun was also awarded an assist on
the play. Neither team could score in the second
period as both teams played a tough game in the
corners and along the boards. In the third period
Evan Trigatti scored from Colin Zimmer and Nathan
Oliphant. The Warriors would get on the board with 6
minutes left in the game on a scramble in front of
the Sarnia net. With 10 seconds left in the game
Mat Waun floated a clearing attempt into the
opposing net to give him his second goal of the
game. The final score was Sarnia 4 – Stratford 1.
Cameron Stevens and Stevie Shaefer split each game
and both played very well. Coach John Vanderwal was
pleased with the hustle the boys displayed on the
weekend, “A great team effort.”
The Jr. Sting next
regular season game is at home vs. the London
Bandits on Friday October 29 – 7:00 at the
Clearwater Arena.
