The Sarnia
Major Atom Sting picked up a win and a loss this past
weekend.
On Saturday,
the Sting travelled to Waterloo to take on the division
leading Waterloo Wolves. The Sting put out a strong first
period effort, with both teams picking up a single goal in
the first period. Justin Houle (assist Devin Devooght)
would get the Sarnia goal knocking home a loose puck on a
goal mouth scramble. The Sting would take control of the
play in the second period, but were unable to find the
finishing touch and the game would go to the 3rd
period tied at 1. In the third period, Waterloo was able to
take possession of the puck from the faceoff, moving into
the Sarnia zone and scoring to take a 2 – 1 lead. This
seemed to break the focus of the Sting, who had controlled
most of the play to this point, and Waterloo was able to
score 3 more goals for a final score of 5 -1.
The Sting
were back on the ice on Sunday to face the West London
Hawks. This turned out to be a fairly close checking game
until the Sting were able to break through with an
unassisted goal on the power play by Jake Vince near the end
of the 2nd period. Before the period expired
Austin Coutts (assist Jack Smith, Matthew Torti) was able to
extend the Sting lead to 2 – 0. In the 3rd
period, Devin Devooght added a short handed goal on a wrap
around and the Sting cruised to a 3 – 0 win. James Dunn was
solid in the net picking up the shutout, with the defensive
troops providing good support, limiting any quality scoring
opportunities. |
