The Sarnia Legionnaires won the 1,500 game in franchise history Saturday.
Coach Jeff Perry's Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League club achieved the historic milestone with a 4-3 triumph over the Elmira Sugar Kings.
That astounding figure includes conquests registered under the team's various nicknames over the past 60 years, including Legionnaires, Sailors, Bees, Steeplejacks and Blast.
During every decade since their formation the fabled club has won far more often than it has lost. In fact, at the end of the 2009 campaign, the franchise had a record of 1,486 wins, 822 losses, 138 ties and 46 overtime or shootout losses.
The team's fantastic record has been compiled despite the fact that, during the early years, there were often less than 30 regular season games played per year. In the first two seasons, when the club was known as the Sailors, the schedules were only 16 games in duration.
Here's a decade-by-decade breakdown of their record:
1950s - 162 wins, 62 losses and six ties.
1960s - 215 wins, 171 losses and 14 ties.
1970s - 243 wins, 137 losses and 50 ties.
1980s -281 wins, 113 losses and 38 ties.
1990s - 267 wins, 194 losses, 24 ties and 13 OT/shootout losses.
2000s - 318 wins, 145 losses, six ties and 33 OT/shootout losses.
2009/10 season - 14 wins to date.
Not all 1,500 wins have come in Jr. 'B' competition. In fact, the total includes 42 victories picked up when the club played three seasons of Tier II Jr. 'A' hockey (the 1968-69 and 1969-70 Legionnaires and the 1971-72 Bees).
During playoffs, the team has won seven 15 Western Jr. 'B' championships and seven Sutherland Cups as all-Ontario champs. Most of their provincial championships have come under the Legionnaires moniker.
