The bad news is that the Sarnia
Legionnaires have scored just one goal
in their first two games.
The good news is that that marker, which
came Sunday night in St. Thomas off the
stick of veteran Andy Sokol, was good to
give the defending Western Jr. 'B'
champs one point in the standings.
Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to get a
victory, as coach Jeff Perry's squad was
edged 2-1 in a shootout by the hometown
Stars.
The loss drops Sarnia's record to 0-1-1
in the Western Conference of the Greater
Ontario Junior Hockey League.
Netminders Seth Anderson of the
Legionnaires and Jared Richmond of the
Stars staged a spirited goaltenders'
duel for 65 minutes to force the
shootout.
Anderson, who was named the game's
second star, kicked out 37 of 38 shots
he faced in four periods of action.
Richmond, who was selected third star,
turned aside all but one of 33 pucks
that came his way.
"I thought it was a pretty evenly
matched game,” general manager Bob
Williamson said. “We competed. Some
positives came out of the game. Seth
Anderson played quite well.”
Andy Sokol scored early in the first
period to put Sarnia ahead on a play set
up by rookie Mike Burns.
"The goalie misplayed it, it was an easy
one that went in low,” Sokol said.
Dave Morden got the equalizer for St.
Thomas late in the second frame, with
Chris Rocca getting an assist. Both are
Sarnia natives.
After that Anderson and Richmond took
over, holding their clubs in the game
with a number of stellar saves.
In the shootout, Joel Steeves scored for
Sarnia, but two Stars found the back of
the net, including Jeff Tervit, who got
the winner.
The Legionnaires will try to pick up
their first win of the season Thursday
when they host the St. Marys Lincolns.
Game time at the Sarnia Arena is 7:30
p.m.
The Lincolns have a 1-1 won lost record.
