Sarnia Legionnaires

Former Sarnia Legionnaires star Matt Abercrombie had two goals and an assist Wednesday as the Thorold Blackhawks defeated the St. Catharines Falcons 5-2 in GOJHL play.

One of his goals came on the powerplay and another was a short-handed marker.

Abercrombie, who led both the Legionnaires and the Western Ontario Hockey Conference in scoring last year, now has four points in two games with Thorold, including two goals. He joined the Hawks, along with former Legionnaires teammate Scott Stafford, this fall.

Both left Sarnia to become students at Brock University.

Abercrombie scored 29 goals and 55 assists for 84 points last year. And he did it playing the whole way on a pair of injured ankles.

Despite his success, he was frequently criticized, both at the rink and on Internet forums, by a small number of  Sarnia fans who suggested he got special treatment because his father, Bill, was the Legionnaires coach. If he played on a team not coached by his dad, they suggested, he wouldn't be a star.

Stafford, a one-handed player, has yet to score for the Hawks. He had six regular season goals and two playoff markers last year with the championship-winning Legionnaires.

The Legionnaires play in Thorold Sept. 23.
