2019-2010 Sarnia Legionnaire Awards

Jesse Drydak has joined very select company.

The Jr. 'B' sniper was named the Most Valuable Player of the  Sarnia Legionnaires last night at the fabled hockey club's annual awards banquet.

Over the years some legendary players have suited up for the franchise, including more than two dozen who went on to play major league hockey.

Needless to say, Drydak was humbled when he saw the names engraved on a trophy he was about to receive.

"It's a great honour,” the 18-year-old Camlachie resident said. “There are a lot of really high-end names on that trophy, names like Matt Abercrombie and John Faulkner. There are a lot of names of guys who went on to play higher levels of hockey.”

Drydak, who had 32 goals and 31 assists last winter, also won an award as the team's top point-getter.

But the scoring ace said he couldn't have captured either honour without the support of his teammates. As for next season, he hopes to have an even bigger impact. “The plan right now is to come back and take my game up to a whole new level. I want to score more goals.”

Drydak added the Legionnaires should be a top contender because most of the players are eligible to return. “Our goal is to bring the Cup right back here. We've got a good corps of guys who will be back next year.”

As for his own future, Drydak plans to study at Lambton College and, after his junior career is over, possibly play hockey in Europe.

Other Legionnaire winners last night included:

Tanner Ferguson, Rookie-of-the-Year. The 16-year-old rearguard had two goals and 14 assists for the Legionnaires.

Tanner Tomlinson, Most Improved Player. Tomlinson, a gritty forward with a hard shot, had 14 goals and 19 assists in just 39 games. He also picked up 154 penalty minutes.

Goalie Jesse Raymond and forward Chase Clark tied for the Outstanding Playoff Performer. Clark had five goals in seven games against the Chatham Maroons. Raymond appeared in six games, picking up one shutout. He would have had a second post season goose egg except for the fact that Chatham was awarded a goal in an 8-1 Legionnaire victory for a shot that actually hit the crossbar.

Owen Rogers won the Spirit Award for a season that saw him score almost a point a game while, at the same time,
displaying great forechecking game-in-and-game out.

Goalie Kyle Washer, who posted two regular season shutouts and won the only playoff game he appeared in, was selected for the People's Choice Award.

Captain Tyler Cicchini, who had 40 points in 44 games, won the Most Dedicated Player Award.

Anton Zupancic, who had two goals and 16 assists,
was name top defenceman.

Harold Williams (right) was the Volunteer of the Year.

In other news, club vice-president Cliff Smith announced more than 150 season tickets have been sold, an unprecedented number for this time of year.

Smith said tickets can be purchased at Sarnia Weddings in the Northgate Plaza. There are also plans to hold a major sale at the Sarnia Arena, probably in late June.

And head coach Jeff Perry told the gathering all of his assistants have agreed to return for another campaign.
