Sarnia Jr Sting Major Peewee Win Second Tournament Championship

In recent action the Sarnia Jr. Sting participated in the Mooretown Storm Rep Tournament and went undefeated again winning there second straight tournament of the season.

In their opening game of the tournament on Thursday night, Sarnia would take on the home team Mooretown Storm. The Sting were slow out of the gate down 1-0 after first period action. Sarnia picked up the pace in the second lighting the lamp five times for a 5-1 lead after two periods and added another pair of goals in the third as they cruised to a 7-1 victory.

Sarnia’s next game was Saturday morning as they took on the Oakridge Aero’s. The Sting dominated this game from beginning to end scoring two goals in both the first and second periods and four in the final period as they beat Oakridge 8-2.

Sarnia’s final round robin game would find them up against the only other undefeated team in the tournament, Fort Erie Jr. Meteors. First period action had both teams playing to a 1-1 draw. Sarnia would take a commanding lead 4-1 in the second before giving up a late second period goal for a 4-2 lead heading into the final period. Third period action had the Meteors close the gap to 4-3, Sarnia would respond giving them the 5-3 lead only to surrender another goal to the Meteors 5-4. Again Sarnia built another two goal lead 6-4, only to be spoiled again by the Meteors who just wouldn’t quit 6-5. Both teams had many chances in the closing minutes of the game as the Sting would prevail with the 6-5 victory. This set the stage for the Championship Game with both teams meeting each other again in the final.

The Championship game had both teams coming out hungry. This was two evenly matched teams battling their hearts out with many huge hits and great puck movement from both teams. First period action had chances at both ends but neither team could find the back of the net as the first period ended scoreless. Sarnia was first on the board in the second after some great penalty killing led to a Sting player coming out of the box and going in on a breakaway to give the Sting a 1-0 lead. A couple of minutes later the Meteors went on a 5-3 power play, with some solid penalty killing and some stellar goaltending the sting were now only shorthanded 5-4 only to have Meteors score with just seconds left in the power play to tie the game up at 1-1 as the second period came to an end setting the stage for the final period. With just under six minutes left in the game the Sting would go up 2-1 on some strong puck cycling down low. Sarnia would increase their lead to 3-1 on a beautiful two on one passing play that would really put the Meteors back on there heels. The Sting would add the final nail in the coffin with a final goal to win the Championship 4-1.

Congratulations to all the boys on an outstanding final game!! Sarnia now awaits there new schedule for the second half of the “AA” season before they head up to Fort Erie in early December for their third tournament where Sarnia will see the Meteors again in round robin competition.
