Petrolia Squires vs Elora Rock
Championship Series
Western Ontario Senior AA Hockey League
April 10, 2010
The Squires season came to a close after losing 3 - 2 to
the Elora Rock before a packed house at the Greenwood
Recreation Centre in Petrolia.
Elora led the series 3 - 2 heading into the sixth game.
The series went back and forth with both sides winning
in their own rink up to this point and Elora needed the
win in Petrolia to take the series.
Petrolia opened the scoring
midway into the first period with James Edgar sliding
one past the netminder just outside the crease.
Creg Bailey assisted on the goal.
With just under two minutes
remaining in the period Elora scored to quick back to
back goals the first at 17:13 and the second at 17:37.
Rich Colwill scored the first and Ken Dunn scored the
second for Elora. The first period ended with
Elora leading 2 - 1.
The Rock took a total of 2
penalties in the game, one in the first and one in the
second allowing only 2 powerplay opportunities.
The Squires took just three penalties in the game,
all in the second period and it was on the final penalty
that Elora scored a powerplay goal to give them a 3 - 1
lead. Mike Brito scored the third goal for the
Rock. The Squires battled back and in the last
minute of play in the second Chris McPhail narrowed the
gap assisted by Jason Polera and Aaron Brand.
Action continued in the
third and it was tense. Both sides went back and
forth and each team had some great scoring opportunities
but were stopped by Justin Day of Petrolia and Blake
Sinclair of Elora who made some entertaining saves.
Petrolia had one opportunity
just roll by as the puck just trickled past the outside
post after a huge scramble in front of the net.
The Squires pulled their goalie with just under 2
minutes of play but the Rock was solid and held them off
until the final buzzer to take the win and the WOAA
Senior AA Championship.
The Squires placed third in the regular season playing
20 games and going 14 wins, 5 losses and 1OT loss
for a total of 28 points. (GF 109 - GA 78) To earn
a spot in the final the Squires defeated Milverton in
the Qualifying round taking the series in five winning 3
games. In the South Division semi final series The
Squires defeated the Monkton Wildcats in game seven.
It was another tough battle in the South Division final
as they won in game 7 over the Ilderton Jets.
Despite the loss it was a
great season for the Squires as they end 2009-2010
thanking their volunteers and fans for their support
throughout the season.
