Storm vs Dorchester

Mooretown opened their series with Dorchester at home Saturday and skated away with a well earned 3-0 victory.

Elijah Contreras opened the scoring in the first period on a nice goal assisted by Rory Pickle. The score remained 1-0 until the 3rd when the Storm salted the game away with an Aaron Dobson goal from Jared Pageau and then a 3-0 lead from Jared Pageau that went unassisted.

The Storm played a very solid defensive game while only allowing six shots on goal. Emma McCormick earned the shut out.

The Atoms travelled to Dorchester Sunday to try and end this series in two games but knew it would be a tough task as going to Dorchester you have to beat the referees also.

Mooretown came out flying taking the play to Dorchester for the first minutes of the game until they came down and scored a weak goal from the top of the circles. This coupled with the phantom calls it was a parade to the penalty box for the Storm.

The biggest travesty occurred in the 2nd period with Mooretown trailing 2-0 the Storm as usual were short handed and as the player left the penalty box the puck was shot the length of the ice but the Dorchester goaltender came out to play the puck above the goal line. As he played it he fell and lost the puck as the Mooretown played grabbed it and not a defender within 20 feet and as he picked it up and skated to score the ref's blew the whistle. The referee that called it from center ice stated it was icing but did not signal an icing call with his arm but waited until we were about to score to blow it down. There was no way it was icing as the goalie played in front of the red goal line.

Mooretown received a bench penalty for questioning the call and Dorchester went out and scored to make it 3-0 after two periods. Dorchester would add another power play goal in the first minute of the 3rd to take a strangle hold 4-0.

With 4 1/2 minutes left in the game Mooretown went on a PP and then a 2 man advantage 10 seconds later. They pulled the goalie at the 4:15 mark to go 6 on 3. The Storm scored at 3:39 from Rory Pickle and Elijah Contreras assisting to make it 4-1. They remained on the PP and kept the goalie out for a 6 on 4 attack and scored again a minute later with Elijah Contreras scoring from Justin Murphy and Jared Pageau. With 2:37 remaining and still down by two goals Mooretown kept the goalie on the bench and went 6 on 5 and scored at 2:06 with a Jared Pageau goal from Elijah Contreras to cut the deficit to one goal.

The goalie was put back in net for the face off and the Storm needed to get the puck deep to get the extra attacker. With just over a minute remaining the Storm got the puck in the defenders zone and on came the extra attacker and the Storm buzzing to tie it up. They were all over Dorchester and with 31 seconds left the Dorchester goalie was penalized for punching Elijah Contreras in the back of the head but the other ref decided to call a slash on Elijah so Dorchester would not be short handed. The Storm did everything but score and Dorchester iced the puck with what would have been 5 seconds left on the clock the play was not called for some strange reason and the game ended.
The Storm should hold their heads high as they battled hard but were done in by the referee's this day.

Another strange occurrence was that the scoreboard could only put the Dorchester penalty time and goals up but not the Mooretown penalties or goals. Very strange indeed.

Mooretown comes home for the 3rd and deciding game Saturday at 1:50 pm at the Moore Sports Complex.
