Lambton Shores vs Leaminton Flyers

The anticipated clash between the Leamington Flyers and the Predators last Saturday ended up being a night of frustration.

Early in the first period the Flyers got started when Nick Butts scored the first of his two goals in a 4 point night. Then at 17:31 a line made up of  the teams Grand Bend connection scored on a power play. Twin brothers Ryan and Matt Rupert of Grand Bend were brought in for the night on affiliation. They were on the wings for centre Kalvin Thornton also of Grand Bend. They both got assists on the goal when Kalvin Thornton was able to beat the net minder to tie the score. The Flyers scored again before the end of the period to take a 2 – 1 into the second period. Over all play in the period appeared even with Predators having the edge in shots on goal 11 – 9.

The second period saw the Flyers scoring another early period goal to gain a 3 – 1 lead. The Predators then squandered an opportunity to have a power play when a Flyer was being called for a checking from behind penalty. In retaliation for the check Chris Salmi challenged the guilty Flyer and landed several punches on him. When the dust settled it was the Predators who were short handed for 5 minutes. Although no other goals were scored in the period the Predators were not able to manage effective puck control and were out shot in the period 17 –7.

In the third period the Flyers managed two more goals to make the final score 5 – 1. Midway through the period the Predators Cam Downie squared off with Flyers Brett Babkirk. The two exchanged several blows before being separated by the linesman and ejected from the game. 

 

Lambton Shores vs St. Thomas Stars

A glimmer of hope remains for the team to catch Leamington and earn a play off spot. The Predators went into St. Thomas on Sunday and took their frustration out on the Stars. Even though they were out shot in the game 41 – 34, Sean Parker in goal managed to save 39 shots. His teammates responded with their biggest goal output of the season to hand the Stars a 7 – 2 drubbing.

The night started off when Dave Hutchinson scored an unassisted goal at 8:16 of the first period. At 11:56 Matt Melo scored his first of two goals in a 4 point night for him. Adam Arseneault assisted in what was a three point night for him with 2 goals and 1 assist in the game. Brandon Stewart was also awarded his first of three assists on the goal. At 12:27 and again at 19:50 of the first period Adam Arseneault scored two more with Brandon Stewart and Matt Melo earning assists on both goals.

Chris Rocca of St. Thomas managed to put one past Sean Parker the second period to make it 4 – 1. The goal was avenged later in the period when Duncan McSorley scored on a power play with Brandon Ethier and Dave Hutchinson earning assists.

Midway through the final frame St. Thomas got their second goal of the night. Then, Cam Downie got an insurance goal at 12:09 with assists going to Coy Kulich and Ben Woodley. At 17:18 with the Stars trying to get back into the game with 6 attackers Ben Woodley fed a pass to Matt Melo who put the icing on the cake with an empty net goal.

The success of the line of Matt Melo and Adam Arseneault and Brandon Stewart was recognized when they were named named the games 3 stars.
