Sting Play Well in K/W
The Minor Atoms visited the K/W area to play a doubleheader this past Sunday against the Kitchener Rangers and Waterloo Wolves. The boys played well in both games however, lost to Kitchener 3-0 and beat Waterloo 3-1.
The first game of the day was against the Rangers. This was a very fast paced game with both teams moving the puck very well. The Sting were once again keeping their shifts short which helped keep a strong forecheck. Neither team scored in the first 2 periods as both teams defense matched the play of the offense. Joe Correia played particularly well in this game showing some great tenacity.
Early in the third period, again the Sting had good pressure in the Rangers zone creating scoring chances that just weren't being capitalized on. Meanwhile, Cole Doig kept the Rangers off the scoresheet making some great saves including a point blank shot from the slot. However, with only about 5 minutes left in the game, the Sting seemed to lose focus or run out of steam and Kitchener pounced on their opportunities scoring 3 quick goals to win 3-0.
The second game of the day was in nearby Waterloo for a rematch with the Wolves. Despite playing earlier the Sting showed no signs of fatigue in this game.
Waterloo opened the scoring midway through the 1st period, but the Sting responded quickly as Cameron Rombouts took a shot on net that rebounded off a defenseman's leg and found the net.
In the second period both teams exchanged scoring opportunities but with the Sting definitely looking like the better team. C. Rombouts came down the left wing taking nice low shot which was tipped by Josh Vale to put the Sting up 2-1.
In the 3rd, Waterloo began to press hard to score but the were thwarted by good back checking, strong defense and of course solid goaltending by Jakob Knowles. With 1:29 left in the game Dante Fuoco made a nice centering pass to Cameron Adam who's one timer was saved but the rebound was knocked in by Lucas Ross to seal the win.
