Alliance Playoffs - Series #1 vs Elgin Middlesex Chiefs

Game #1

The Jr. Sting hosted EMC on Saturday at noon after the game scheduled for Friday in Glencoe was cancelled. The Jr. Sting wanted to take advantage of getting the first game at home.

The play between Lambton and EMC was even early on but EMC began to take control and scored first. Lambton picked up the pace of play in the second period and the score remained 1-0 until Brennan Mckegan scored early in the third period on a rebound off a point blast by Nash Nienhuis. EMC regained the lead later in the third but Max Steeves knotted the score at two each, sending the game into overtime.

In overtime Lambton had a number of good chances on a power play but were unable to score. After the penalty expired the Jr. Sting committed an infraction of their own and were victimized by an end-to-end rush and lost in OT; 3-2.

The boys put in a strong effort and played right with Elgin. Nash Nienhuis had two assists  Brennan McKegan and Max Steeves each had one goal. Nick Discanno and Josh Barraclough had single helpers.

Game #2

The Jr. Sting traveled to Strathroy on Sunday afternoon hoping to get a win and tie the short 2 out of 3 series.

Both teams were cautious in the first and the period ended at 0-0. Lambton got on the board early in the second period with Ryan Gould bouncing one in off the rush assisted by Nick Discanno and Jameson Hart. It was a big goal for the boys on that line and got the team rolling. The Jr. Sting started to buzz and Cade Robbins buried one in the top corner after a nice feed from his D partner Garrett Miller. EMC scored to make it 2-1 but then Jameson Hart got the lead back to 2, after he picked off a pass and raced in and buried a wrister to make it 3-1 after two periods.

Lambton continued to control the play but then the Jr. Sting found themselves in penalty trouble and EMC went on their first of two, five on three power play opportunities. Lambton killed off the first one, with a number of players sacrificing their bodies to block shots. The Jr. Sting were not able to kill off the second, five on three and EMC made it a 3-2 hockey game with less than four minutes to go. Lambton continued to do what they had to, to get the win and held on to a 3-2  road victory.

Lambton tied the series 1-1 and will travel to Glencoe on Tuesday for game three.

The line of Ryan Gould and Jameson Hart (each with a goal and an assist) and Nick Discanno (2 assists) led the team with their efforts. Cade Robbins had a goal and Garrett Miller and Jack Hackett each had assists. Ethan Hunt was strong between the pipes.

Game #3

The Jr. Sting traveled to Glencoe for game three on Tuesday night wanting to win the series on the road.

Play was fast and furious right from the drop of the puck with each team producing good scoring opportunities off of some hard fore-checking. Max Steeves opened the scoring for the Jr. Sting on a beautiful individual effort, jumping around the EMC D man and then burying a low wrister from the top of the circle. Period one ended with Lambton up 1-0. Steeves had to leave the game after one period due to an upper body injury and did not return.

Both teams continued to pour it on in the second, knowing that the winner moves on to play another series. EMC capitalized on a power play opportunity mid-way through the period to even it up and looked to be gaining momentum. EMC continued to put the pressure on and only because of some great defensive play and excellent goaltending by Ethan Hunt the score remained tied 1-1 at the end of two.

The third period continued at a break-neck pace with both teams looking to get the next one. It was the Jr. Sting’s Daniel Wellington who broke the tie, scoring on power move going outside the D and then roofing one “top shelf” mid-way through the final regulation period. Elgin Middlesex threw everything at the net for the remaining ten minutes including two power plays where they had the Jr. Sting on their heels, but again great defensive efforts by both the forwards and defensemen kept a lot of the shots away and when one did get through Ethan Hunt was spectacular.

Lambton held on for a nail biting 2-1 win in the game and a 2-1 series victory and look ahead to playing Windsor (again) in the next round.  Daniel Wellington had a goal and an assist. Max Steeves had a single marker and Josh Barraclough had an assist.

Congrats boys on the biggest win of the year!
