The Sarnia Lady
Sting Midget AA girls travelled to Detroit
this past weekend to compete in the Belle
Tire Friendship Tournament.
Friday's game
put Sarnia up against the Barrie Sharks.
Despite outplaying Barrie the entire game, a
lack of scoring by either side, gave Sarnia
only one point with a 0-0 tie. Cassie
Kerrigan did a fabulous job in net, securing
the shutout.
Saturday morning
the Sting faced the Kitchener Rangers in a
very rough game. A Kitchener forward was
tossed in the second period for hitting from
behind. Despite being roughed up Sarnia did
manage to score first. Jillian Rops sent a
bullet in passed the goalie to bring the
Sting up 1-0 in the first period. Mackenzie
Dark and Rylea Evans both assisted on the
play. The Sting held the lead until late in
the third. Kitchener celebrated a goal which
appeared to be after the whistle. Bringing
much confusion as one referee was calling it
no goal. After arguments from both sides,
they awarded the Rangers the goal. That is
how the game ended in a 1-1 tie. If the
decision had went the other way, Sarnia
would have advanced instead of Kitchener.
Mallory Mullin played a very strong game in
net for Sarnia stopping 24 shots.
In game three
Sarnia went up against Honeybaked. A very
fast skating, hard checking team from
Michigan. The game had a total of 24 minutes
in penalties, and every goal was scored on
the powerplay. Sarnia opened the scoring in
the first on a beautiful goal by Marlowe
Pecora. She was assisted by Megan Moore.
Minutes later Honeybaked would get one of
their own to tie things up. Early in the
third Honeybaked would score again to go
ahead 2-1. Unfortunately having to play a
good part of the remainder of the game short
Sarnia could not tie things up. Their only
loss of the tournament 2-1. Cassie Kerrigan
stopped 33 shots, and played a great game.
Sarnia's final
game was Sunday morning against Trinity.
Even though a win would not move the Sting
on, they still wanted to go out on a high
note. And that they did. Sarnia's Marlowe
Pecora would find the back of the net not
once, but twice in the opening period. The
first goal was assisted by Karly Dobbin, and
the second was a beautiful break away goal.
The score remained that way until the third
period when Alicia MacDougal would chip one
in on the rebound from Sierra Butler's hard
shot that hit the post. Both Butler and
Erica Bucci picked up assists. Looking like
an easy win, Trinity surprised the very
tired Sting team, by scoring a couple of
quick goals in the last few minutes of the
game. But two would not be enough, and
Sarnia would go on to win 3-2. Mallory
Mullin got the win stopping 19 shots and
holding her own as always.
Even though
Sarnia didn't advance to the finals, they
played amazing all weekend. Keeping it close
in every single matchup and only losing
once.
Sarnia's next
game is Wednesday night in Sarnia at 8:00 pm
at the Clearwater arena against Cambridge.
This is their first meeting of the season.
