This past weekend, the Sarnia Jr.
Lady Sting Bantam A Team played in the International
Female Hockey Festival, “Hocktoberfest” taking 1st
place with 5 wins and 1 tie.
In the first game against North Halton, the girls
had a tough battle. The game ended up a 1-1 tie,
with Kendra Marotta with the only goal, assisted by
Krystal Adair. Karley Ferguson was goaltending this
game, and made several amazing saves, including on a
few breakaways. Although this was not the girls’
best game, they knew they had to take it to the next
team.
The girls 2nd game was against Sault Ste.Marie,
and the girls had a 3-1 win. The goals were scored
by Chantal Caraher, assisted by Marotta and Allison
Lawrence. The second goal was scored by Emily
Williams, with assists from Nicki Parkes and Jenna
Rops. The third and final goal was scored, again by
Emily Williams with assists from Nicki Parkes and
Darian Adams. Erica Sullivan, whose amazing
goaltending skills pulled through stopping several
breakaways, keeping the girls in the game.
The next game, the girls played against Clearview.
Ferguson in goal stood strong and pulled Sarnia
through for their first shutout. The game ended up a
4-0 win for Sarnia. The first goal was scored by
Darian Adams, which was unassisted followed by
Kassie Roache assisted by Sidney Weiss and Sydney
Smith. Adams second goal, assisted by Marotta and
Williams, put Sarnia in a 3-0 lead. The last goal
was scored by Lawrence and assisted by Roache and
Caraher.
In the quarter finals, Sarnia captured a big win, 5-0
against Barrie. Erica Sullivan, making several
saves, gave Sarnia another shut out, which would put
them in the semis. Parkes, with the first goal, was
assisted by Adams. The next goal, scored by Jennifer
Zavitz and assisted by Weiss. For the 3-0 lead,
Adams got one, assisted by Williams and Smith.
Zavitz scored again, with assists from Roache and
Weiss. To finish the game on a good note, Marotta popped
one in, with assists from Caraher and Lawrence.
After the girls passed the quarters in flying colours,
they headed to the semi-finals against Hamilton.
The first goal, Smith slapped it in hard, with the
assist from Williams. The next goal was scored by
Roache with the assists from Rops and Weiss. The
final goal the guaranteed the girls a spot in the
finals, was scored by Smith unassisted. The game
ended up a 3-1 win for Sarnia, with Ferguson in net,
got the girls through again.
In the finals, the girls went in confident, and came out
champions. The game against London was a tough game,
but Sarnia pulled through and won it
2-0. Erica Sullivan kept the shutout
all through the game, which definitely helped the
girls make it through. The goals were scored by
Jennifer Zavitz, a top-shelf, short handed (5 on 3
for London) goal which was unassisted. The last goal
to keep the win strong was scored on a beautiful
play by Darian Adams and Emily Williams, Adams with
the goal, and Williams with the assist.
Congratulations to the girls for finishing a tiring
6 game tournament, undefeated, coming out of it all,
champions. |
