Lloyd & Ruth Ann Windover are truly a couple that are “Builders” in our community.  This award recognizes their significant contributions to our sporting community they have both made as individuals and as a couple.

 

Lloyd Windover grew up near Petrolia and played fastball, hockey in farmer fields and ponds and at the Petrolia Arena after it was constructed.  He was a member of the Junior Farmers Hockey team.  Lloyd attended the University of Western Ontario then went on to Teachers College and taught for the Sarnia Board of Education then later with the Lambton County Board of Education.  Lloyd was active in school sports coaching soccer, two pitch, floor hockey, volleyball as well as supervising field days and cross country runs.
 

In the community Lloyd is a member of the Lambton AAA Hockey Association, Sarnia Hockey Association and SMAA.  He is the, Second Vice President of Lambton AAA, Secretary and Communications Director for Sarnia Hockey Association and first Vice Chair for the SMAA.  In 1993 Lloyd was involved with the formation of SMAA Inline Hockey.  He was the inaugural secretary of that sport that he continues today.  Lloyd is also involved as a volunteer with the Sarnia Lakeshore Optimist, Bluewater Musical Productions, Retired Teachers of Ontario and the Imperial Theatre.


Ruth Ann (Chowen) Windover was born and raised in Moore Township and attended high school at SCITS.  She too attended the University of Western Ontario and Teachers College and taught in area schools for the Sarnia Board of Education then later with the Lambton County Board of Education.  As the mother of four boys Ruth Ann supported them as they played soccer, fastball, baseball and ball hockey in the summers and ice hockey in the winter.  Ruth Ann was an active member in the Hockey Mothers Group in the mid 1980’s and became a member of the SMAA representing this group.  In 1991 Ruth Ann was elected chairperson of the SMAA and in 1993 became the local represented at the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario – a provincial Operating Committee that she continues to serve on today.  After the merging of SMAA Hockey and East Sarnia Minor Hockey Associations in 1998 that formed today’s Sarnia Hockey Association,  Ruth Ann continued to be a member of the board as Alliance Operating Committee Representative, Director of A/AA Representative teams, ice schedule for the A/AA teams and MD team.  Ruth Ann also sits on the committee which chooses the RBC Scholarship winners nominated from local minor hockey teams.  In 1993 Ruth Ann became the inaugural chairperson of SMAA Inline and held that position until 2004.

Like her husband Lloyd, Ruth Ann serves her community volunteering with the Sarnia Lakeshore Optimist, Bluewater Musical Productions, Retired Teachers of Ontario and the Imperial Theatre.  She also sits on a committee at Northern College that provides funds for school improvements and scholarships.

 

Together Lloyd and Ruth Ann work together as volunteers in many venues as score keepers, clock operators for local hockey tournaments such as Silver Stick, the AAA Golden Blade Tournament, Sarnia Hockey Houseleague Tournaments.  They also volunteered at the National Women’s Championships that were held in Sarnia. Lloyd and Ruth Ann have 4 children Jamie, Darcy, Michael and Corey.
