Are you ready
Sarnia-Lambton? In just
a few short days the
2010 Royale Cup Canadian
Junior Girl’s Golf
Championship will be
held at Sawmill Creek
Golf Resort and Spa in
Camlachie.
The prestigious event
will take place August
3-6 and will feature
some of the top junior
golfers from across
Canada.
Matt MacKay of the Royal
Canadian Golf
Association is the
tournament director. He
reports that over 120
girls have registered to
date. Registration will
close on July 30th.
The event is open to
girls 19 years of age as
of August 6th.
MacKay is confident the
event will reach the
full field of 156
golfers. This event has
been held in Canada
every year since 1955.
MacKay says there are
several notable names
already entered in this
year’s event. They
include Rebecca Lee-Bentham
of Richmond Hill,
semi-finalist at this
year’s Ladies British
Open Championship,
MacKenzie Brooke
Henderson of Smith
Falls, who at 12 years
of age won the Future
Links Quebec Tournament
earlier this month,
Augusta James of Bath
who won the Ontario
Junior Girls Tournament
this month and has
played on the CN Women’s
tour against
professionals, and
Brogan McKinnon of
Mississauga, who won the
Toronto Star Women’s
amateur event this year.
Fans will be able to
cheer on some local
entries. They include
Miranda David of Huron
Oaks, Stephanie
Charteris and Nicole
McDonald, both of the
Sarnia Golf and Curling
Club.
This will be the first
time ever a RCGA event
like this has been held
at any golf course in
the Sarnia-Lambton area.
The best part for golf
fans is there will be NO
admission charge.
Opening ceremonies are
set for Monday, August 2
at 6 p.m. Competition
begins Tuesday, August 3
at 7:30 a.m. The field
will be reduced to the
top 70 and ties after 36
holes.
Margo Harrison is the
host club’s tournament
chairperson. She and her
committee of 20
dedicated Sawmill Creek
members have been
meeting at least once a
month since January to
ensure a successful
event. Over 100
volunteers have also
stepped forward to help
out in a number of areas
throughout the
tournament.
Sawmill Creek Golf
Resort and Spa is an
exceptionally
conditioned par 71,
Links style 6,445-yard
championship layout
featuring bent grass on
tees, fairways and
greens.
The course first opened
in 1994 as nine holes
while a full 18 holes
opened in 1996. Matt
Alexander is general
manager while the owners
include Dan Odorocio and
Anthony Alberga. Paul
Dumont is the head golf
pro and Jamie Downton
head greenskeeper.
