Junior
Pan Am gymnastics championships.
ARACAJU, Brazil
Eight of
Canada’s Olympic hopefuls in gymnastics
including Dominique Pegg of Sarnia,
competed at the 2009 Pan Am junior
championships November 6-8 in Aracaju, Brazil.
Held every two years, the Pan Am
championships also doubles this year as the
continental qualifier for North, South and
Central America for the Youth Olympic Games with
six spots up for grabs in women’s gymnastics and
five for the men.
The Canadian women's team
members were Dominique Pegg of Sarnia, Ont.,
Canadian junior all around champion Anysia Unick
of Calgary and 2008 Canadian novice champion
Madeline Gardiner of Cambridge, Ont.
The four-member men’s team consists of Robert
Watson of Port Coquitlam, B.C., Ian Galvan of
Calgary, Jaylan Birl and Tariq Dowers, both of
Mississauga, Ont.
Canada won the silver
medal in the women’s team event on Saturday.
The U.S., won the gold medal with 171.55 points,
the Canadians followed at 156.95 and Brazil was
third at 154.25.
The
competition includes team, individual all around
and event finals.
Pegg a gold medal winner on vault at the last
Pan Am Games held two years ago in Guatemala City earned
Bronze at this year's event.
U.S., gymnasts placed 1-2 with Alexandra Raisman earning the
gold with 14.700 points and Brigitte Caquato second at
14.238. Pegg, the defending champion on the apparatus,
followed at 14.075.
Anysia Unick of Calgary won bronze medals on vault and beam
respectively on Sunday at the conclusion of the junior
Pan American gymnastics championships.
Pegg and Unick were also fourth and fifth respectively on
floor and Unick sixth on uneven bars.
In the men’s event finals, Jaylin Birl of
Mississauga, Ont., was fifth on floor (14.275) and sixth on
vault (14.988). Robert Watson of Port Coquitlam, B.C., was
fifth on high bar (13.550), sixth on rings (13.550) and
seventh on floor (13.950). Ian Galvan of Calgary was eighth
on both rings (12.675) and vault (14.563) while Tarir Dowers
of Mississauga was eighth on pommel horse (13.125).
