ALVINSTON DEFEATS
GLENCOE IN GAME 5
The Alvinston Indians finally did it. They defeated
Glencoe in a series. Alvinston had been 0-2 against
Glencoe in the playoffs in the past, but on Tuesday they
changed their fortunes. Alvinston jumped out to an
early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, after Joe
Triest led off with a single, and both Steve Donald, and
Theo Metron followed suit, with Metron driving in Triest
for the game's opening run. Then after a Scott Smith
sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and
third with one out, Jeff Ingram followed with a double
to score Donald for a 2-0 lead. Glencoe returned the
favour in their half of the first inning, when Mark
Johnson led off with a triple, and scored on a sacrifice
fly by Mark McCallum, to get things close again, with a
2-1 score.
Indians starter John
Ferguson would then shut the door, as would Glencoe
starter Shaun Winship. Ferguson would retire Glencoe's
next 9 batters over the next three innings, and then
shut out a Glencoe threat to score in the fifth inning.
In the sixth, Brad Young would finally relieve Ferguson
for Alvinston, after he allowed a hit with one out in
the bottom of the sixth inning. Young would shut the
door in the sixth, heading into the seventh inning.
In the top of the seventh
inning, Alvinston added an all important insurance run.
Andy Triest led off with a triple into the gap, and
would score on a one out bunt single by Steve Donald to
ice the game. With Alvinston up 3-1, Young retired the
first two hitters in the seventh, allowed one base
runner on a hit by pitch, and then retired the final out
to seal the win for Alvinston. The final score was
Alvinston 3, Glencoe 1.
John Ferguson threw a gutsy
game on the mound for Alvinston to earn the win and
series win, as he scattered 2 hits over 5 1/3 innings
pitched, allowing only one earned run, while striking
out 2. Young would come in and shut the door to earn
the save. Steve Donald paced the Alvisnton attack going
3/4 in the game.
Alvisnton now faces Shedden
in the St. Thomas and District Major Fastball League
Finals, with game 1 going Thursday night in Alvinston,
beginning at 7:30pm. Game 2 will go Sunday in Fingal.
